This is just my guess, but I think he's talking about losing sight of God in the modern world. "In the woods, we return to reason and faith". When you are out in nature and your primary concerns are of survival and appreciating the beauty around you, life is put into perspective. In contrast, living in society with all of these conveniences and distractions, it's easy to get caught up in little things that don't necessarily matter.
