They are similar to "water tornadoes" because of their funnel that drops from the sky down to the earth in a cicular form.
They are similar to hurricanes because they are catagorized based on wind speed.
Both "Water Tornadoes" and Hurricanes move in a circular pattern and can prove to be destructive to what they come across. A good thing to know is that Hurricanes can produce tornadoes, tornados cannot produce hurricanes, make sense?

Hurricanes: violent cyclonic storm. this term is used for storms originating in the North atlantic ocean. Similar storms in the Indian ocean are called Cyclones and those on the west pacific ocean are called typhoons. All of them are deadly and cause a lot of destruction. Due to the temperature and air pressure differences, these storms move in a clockwise direction in the northern hemisphere and anticlockwise in Southern hemisphere.
These may cause thunderstorms in affected areas, and because of air pressure and temperature differences that may be present at that time in a place, tornadoes may form. Tornadoes appear and disappear quickly.
A search on weather websites and some research sites would give much more information.
An area of low pressure around which winds blow counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere. They are hurricanes basically. tornado run from ground to cloud

I've heard cyclone used most frequently for hurricanes. I'd check out cyclones on www.wikipedia.org. It might help you.
