This past spring it was brought to my attention that I most likely have seasonal affective disorder (SAD). I am now looking for a SAD lamp for the coming winter months, and I was wondering what some good brands are. I am looking for a desk lamp model if possible, or at least a smaller light that looks like a normal light fixture would. If anyone has any suggestions or sites in mind, please let me know. Thanks.

The ones that look like a normal light fixture are not bright enough to work. the sunray is a good one, and some company out of alaska makes one just like it for about 50 dollar less - northern lights, might be the name of the company. The light does NOT need to be full spectrum, it SHOULD have a UV filter, and should provide a light intensity of 10,000 lux at a distance of 18 inches or MORE. Just saying 10,000 lux in an advertisement is useless info - many of those lamps are not bright enough. To get that kind of light intensity, you have to hunch over and stare right into the lamp at a distance of like 6". Expect to pay about $300. For some interesting info, go to psycheducation.org and look for a link to light boxes. SOME evidence says that blue lights may do just as well (not much proof yet, because there isn't much profit in selling these light boxes) and blue LED xmas lights happen to be just the right wavelength. So for like 10 bucks, you can experiment, and they are on clearance now, if there are any left. Sylvania don't flicker and many brands of LED lights do, which can cause eye strain.
It also helps me that I have painted my rooms in cheerful colors, like yellow and peach, and having a skylight and keeping draperies off of southern windows. I have bipolar, but it's very seasonal.
I know about an excellent light box that is portable and hardly noticeable, but it's as effective as the big devices. It's called the Litebook Elite and you can see a review about it here:
