I get really bad winter blues, and I've struggled with depression all my life, but I've found ways to try to avoid it by staying busy and what not. But lately with the automatic winter blues and a lot of other stuff going on that I've had to deal with, it's getting out of hand and I'm not sure what to do about it. Advice??

Thank you so much for taking the time to reach out this evening. Depression is difficult for somebody to go through, and really has a way of dragging you down and sapping your energy. We really think it is wonderful that instead of shutting down you have opened up. The winter blues are common for people to experience during the cold months they are couped up inside of their homes. It always helps to have others there to lean on for some comfort and support, rather than trying to pretend like nothing has been bothering you.
It always helps to set some goals for you to work towards. Keep them manageable and set goals you can accomplish in the near future, such as a few days or a week. Then, you can spend your time and energies working towards these goals. Achieving your goals can give you that sense of purpose and accomplishment that is so important for people to have.

Meditate on the positive aspects of your self, confront the negetive thoughts and try to train your brain to do this. The Dali Lama's thoughts may be worth a read, otherwise see your Dr and ask for help, psychiatric nurse perhaps
Just make yourself do something. Even if its just making your bed, it will help. Make a to do list.
make the first few very easy, they can even be 'walk to the shop' then make your way down to things like ' meet up with friends and have a good time' and eventually make your way to more difficult stuff.
Try to get out of bed and just take a walk. I feel that when im feeling depressed, i take out my bike and ride down to the shop and buy something really nice, such as: crisps, yoghurt covered nuts and a cupcake :))
talk to your doc, they can put you on a very low dose of a anti depressant. I know most people shy away from them and think ISSUES when hearing that statement but it can be an imbalance of your chemicals in your brain, This can sort them out and then your doc can slowly ween you off and you will get better.
Focus on what makes you happy. Even if it's a chair. Just keep thinking.. chair, chair, chair, chair. It works.
