Try taking shots from unusual angles.
Work with shadows.
Go into a department store, and take photos of the manikins from new angles.
Take a picture of a road in your rear view car mirror.
Take photos of people in the morning fog.
Take a close-up shot of a chess game board.
Find a good gray foggy day and have a tripod mounted camera ready. Take a couple of model subjects along and scout around for a scene that adds a surreal gothic touch to the scene. When you've found your scene, surrounded by fog, steady mount the tripod cam and viewfinder set your scene. Instruct your models, on cue, to walk into the scene VERY VERY VERY SLOWLY---because your camera will be set on OPEN SHUTTER or TIME EXPOSURE mode. Be sure to set the cam on black / white mode, too. Try THAT and see what happens!! Yes, this too has been done before---but the effects are like snowflakes---each set is as unique and different!!!
Look at the works of Sandy Skoglund, Angus McBean, and other surreal photographers who worked in the period before digital manipulation.
