I'm making my daughter's cake for her birthday and want to use a stencil to decorate the top. I was going to use colored sugar for the design. Are there any tips that I should know? Do I frost it first? I've never done this before I've just seen the finished product. Thanks for your help.

It is easier to do the stencil first. then pipe icing around the design and then spread away from the design.
Another way would be to ice the cake with a stiff frosting. gently lay wax paper with a hole roughly the size of the stencil design, then lay the stencil over the wax paper. do the stencil then lift the wax paper and stencil off the cake.
If you're talking about the kind of cake where the design is sugar stuck on the frosting, you need to frost it first.
