i keep seeing people on the news being referred to as a parish president and i'm just curious what this is i live in alabama so i'm not familiar with louisisana goverenment

As I understand it, a parish president is sort of like a mayor in that the parish president goes about community-specific management efforts, freeing the mayor up to handle city-wide affairs.
A Parish in Louisiana is the same thing as a county in every other state. So it's like a County Executive.
A parish is the equivalent of a county. The parish president is the head of the county (parish) government.
