They are equal in my eyes. I find DiCaprio to be a better actor and more versatile, while Johnny Depp is obviously a great actor as well, he has not enough light or meaning behind his eyes.

Johnny Depp. Dead Man, Benny and Joon, Donnie Brasco, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Sleepy Hollow (absurb accent but great fun in a very cool film), Ed Wood (excellent performance). I haven't seen POTC but saw clips of the first film and he was very funny. I don't think DiCaprio can match him either for serious roles or comedy ability. Depp is simply more versatile.

As for looks, I never rated them both much as they are too effeminate for my taste, but Depp is a little manlier looking.

I think they are both good actors.

Johnny Depp wins in the looks department. I think he's really creative and can put on so many personas. I can see Johnny Depp play a crazy and misunderstood genius.

I can not see Leonardo play a crazy and misunderstood genius. I think Leo wins with the acting in more traditional roles. I can see Leo playing an artist, or something like in Titanic. But I can also see him playing a 'bad guy' or something.
