I recently got hacked and my antivirus removed heaps of infected files, however I think some of them may have been important system files.
I can now only open exe files by running as admin, but if I click on the shortcut the "Choose which program you want to open this file with" dialog comes up.
One of the files my antivirus removed (I believe permanently) is MSDERUN.exe.

Go on eBay and get a cheap copy of xp and go to Ubuntu's website and down load the Ubuntu 10.04 iso and burn it to cd than reboot with the xp partition and delete the vista partition and create a new nstf partition than install xp and device drivers than install Ubuntu than you can dual boot xp and Ubuntu. you can use the xp for games and programs that only run on windows and use the Ubuntu for the Internet and linux programs.
Are you easily effective this an exe document? no longer all documents with a .exe extension are homestead windows executables. Viruses can come packaged like this. The document might no longer be an executable it extremely is why homestead windows is pulling up the "Open With" window. in basic terms a tenet, attempt renaming the executable to .txt and beginning it with notepad. The document ought to incorporate unreadable codes. If it includes readable English then delete it. what's the filename of this executable? in case you OS isn't homestead windows, then you definately can no longer run EXE documents with out an adaptor.
msderun.exe is not a windows file, it's malware.
the malware changed the file association for exe files. you can download a fix that will restore Windows default settings for opening exe.
for Vista (and a link to fixes for Windows 7)

read the instructions, download the fix for exe
if you have xp then use this link

That sounds like one effect of the Vista Antispyware 2010 malware (among other aliases) that's rampant right now. Look at these two links:

Good luck.
I am not sure which OS you are use, but you need to restore .exe file associations. google for "Restoring exe file associations Win7/Vista/XP" depending on which OS you use.
the virus blocked your registry.
you can go to safe mode.
when booting, press F8 and select safe mode.
download regtool and fix the errors.
