i have been pondering this.
because he generally is not this erratic, he is acting more like hamlet than laertes, very melodramatic.
why is he putting on this act of extreme remorse?

Mostly because some experts contend Laertes was very much in love with his sister. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised.
