I use a notebook computer, getting a bit old i suppose in terms of them at about 5 years old now. Its an hp pavillion ze5500.
Its cpu usegae often tops at close to and at 100% too frequently. Fan whirs alot. Freezes or slows down functionality to near freezing so I often have to push restart power button to shut it off and then restart it for it to begin working again.
Anyway, smaller issue is happening now, where images I save as desktop background images mysteriously disappear after shutdown & restart of computer last few days. Thats not happened before.
Any ideas why & how to correct? The images in same location on my computers harddrive as when set to desktop image.

Most likely your registry is messed up. If your registry has errors, your computer will restore it from the backup when it starts. But if the backup is also glitched up, it will do this every time it starts up, which will undo any changes to your settings that you have made since the registry got messed up. A bad registry can NOT be fixed with regedit. To fix it, you need to either reinstall Windows or get a registry cleaner (a kind of program that fixes registry errors).
