try taking the hard drive off the side and running your 360. if i works then your harddrive is taking a crap, thats what mine did
I'm with Renegade on this one. Same thing happened to my brother's 360, and he got a new that's been working since he got it (last year). If you want an Elite, then go ahead, but if you want to save money, try sending it in and getting it fixed.
Good suggestion about taking the hard drive out and seeing if that helps. 18004MYXBOX is the number to call, but it is free. I understand the 'time' part, but you won't have to pay a cent. It could also be your DVD drive. Check this link, it can be really helpful if you decide to try to do your own repair. Just remember if you open it, you void the warranty. I used the link below to fix my original xbox and I think you'll find it useful.
it doesn't cost anything to ship your 360 in to get fixed, just call Microsoft and tell them your 360 is broken and they will send you a box and you put your 360 in and send it back
or you could do what you said and buy an Elite
you will get a prompt adapter for the xbox, yet this is high priced (around a hundred$). yet another decision, is connecting a pc to the xbox and using it as a prompt adapter with ICS (cyber web connection sharing) - seek youtube for it in case you have an pastime in that. yet another decision may well be using a change, that's variety of a "station" for the cable, the place you could connect yet another cable from it on your laptop, yet paying for an prolonged ethernet cable is greater straightforward - you will get one in any conventional laptop / gamers save.
