My Compaq sr1103wm is currently running, poorly, on Windows 2000. A friend of mine has a Windows Vista upgrade for my computer, but my PC says it's made for Windows XP. Does this mean I can't use Windows Vista?

Look up your specs on hp.com. It will tell you either your system is Vista compatible or not.
Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor
Make sure your computer is ready for the edition of Windows Vista you want.
The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor will help you to determine if your Windows XP-based PC can run Windows Vista. You can also use the Upgrade Advisor to determine if your Windows Vista-based PC is ready for an upgrade to a more powerful edition of Windows Vista
You can go to microsoft Vista site and download a program to determine hardware compatibility for your computer. Here is the upgrade advisor:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get...
It will scan your system for hardware compatiblity. You may find that you have to replace hardware that isn't compatible. If your computer is that old, it may not run Vista at all which is pretty hardware demanding.
In the end, you may be stuck with getting a new computer. Windows 7 is coming out on October 23rd. Better to wait and get a new computer with W7 on it than invest in a Vista computer now.
Just because it says "made for XP" doesn't mean you can't upgrade. You just need to make sure you have the correct hardware for running win vista. You need AT LEAST 512 mbs of ram, a decent processor (one that was built within this decade), a vista-compatible video card and drivers, and you'll probably need to update every one of your drivers. If you can't that's ok, because vista has an automatic driver finding wizard that i love. You shouldn't have any problems installing it, though, as long as your hardware is beefy enough. for more info about system requirements visit microsoft's website. But, in my opinion, going from xp to vista is more of a downgrade. Unless you have awesome hardware, you're probably gonna wish you never "upgraded".
But, that's just my opinion.
With your specs you can run XP but not Vista.Your CPU is the budget Celeron and your memory is only 1 GB,Vista will be torture on this computer.
