Hello
I have been a permanent resident of Canada since June 2008.
I understand from the website (www.cic.gc.ca) that to keep permanent resident status ‘a permanent resident must live in Canada for at least two years in a five-year period.’
My wife is Canadian and we have been working and living in South Africa for the last 5 years (and will be for the next few years).
I believe that since I am living with my wife then this is in effect the same as living in Canada and that I would still be eligible to permanent resident status even if we didn’t return to Canada before the 5 year anniversary of receiving my permanent resident card. Can anyone please confirm this to be correct?
Thank you

You are correct; when you renew your Permanent Residence card in 2013 you need to provide proof of your marriage and proof of your spouse's Canadian citizenship since you have been outside of Canada for more than 1095 days within the last 5 years.

Each day that you are accompanying a Canadian citizen outside Canada is considered a day for which you satisfy the residency obligation provided that the person you are accompanying is your spouse or common-law partner.

The days you are out of the country will count and minus from 5 years of residency.
Well, you may be right. See site below and read carefully. You may be wise to consult an immigration lawyer and be sure. Sounds risky to me...so you need to check it out and be absolutely sure.
