If the QB laterals the ball to a Receiver from behind the Line of Scrimmage, then it counts as rushing yards for the Receiver. If the QB laterals it from beyond the Line of Scrimmage, then its pass yards for the Receiver.

Sideways and behind are allowed as lateral (backward) passes. If they are forward at all, they are regular passes.
if its behind the quarterback its a run if its behind the line but in front of the qb its a pass.
