I somehow forgot my password to log into windows vista and i didn't make a password reset disk & the only account i had was the administrative account, So it seems the only option is to reinstall vista but I'm uncertain whether or not I will lose all my installed programs, documents and music files?

Yes you will lose everything... Your best bet might be to buy a password reset program for Vista, they are available.

Good my Friend!!
Try using the Recovery Console, start up your computer, go F8 and into Safe Mode. There there's an admin account you can use to go into the restore feature and/or reset your password for the account on their.
If you reinstall, you will lose your files. The only way would be to install Windows again on another partition, just have to tell the installation process not to overwrite the partition you have now.
If your worrying about losing files by reformatting your drive the most simple solution would be to use a portable hard drive and put all your files on it the once you re load your vista you can also re load your files.
how many partitions do you have? if you have different partitions other than drive c, and you saved your files in your drive d for example, then you wont lose your files. you just have to reformat your drive c.
but if you only have one partition (drive c only), then your files will be lost...
