The D70 is a decent cam, particularly if you do the firmware upgrade to D70s spec (all free)
6MP doesn't sound that great today, but it was enough then, and heres a little secret.... it's enough now for the vast majority.
D40 was a basic entry level model, D70 was midrange for it's day and it shows,
D70 over the D40 any day of the week, month, year, century or millenia.
The D70 is a great camera. It is a mid level camera having an internal focus motor, while the D40 is the first true entry-level digital camera Nikon made. As such, it does not have an internal focus motor, and can only autofocus AF-S lenses.
I had a D70 that I gave to my youngest son when I bought my D90.
$100 is a nice price.
The only issue is some of the early D70 cameras had an issue where it just would not turn on. Nikon produced a bulletin about them, and apparently some component that was out of spec was responsible. Nikon will repair those cameras free.
My D70 had that problem. One day, it just would not turn on. I sent it to Nikon and they fixed it at no charge.
The D70 was and is a great camera, that actually outshoots the more costly D100. I used one for several years, before loaning it out to a friend, and used it for WNBA, NBA, & NCAA sportsphotography. It was fast, and responsive. Even though it's an older camera than the D40 or even D5100, it has one big advantage. With my D70, and it's built-in autofocus motor, I could use EVERY af Nikon & 3rd party Nikon-mount lens out there. Some of my best shots were with a beloved all-metal Nikon 75-300mm lens, that won't autofocus on the current generation of Nikon entry-level cameras.

Can it take good pictures? Well, that depends on the photographer, but here's some 39 million photos to give you an idea of what it's capable of. Use the Now Showing dropdown menu or Search for subjects of interest.

RE: Charging a Nikon D70 digital camera with USB? Today I purchased a used Nikon D70 digital camera. The vendor informed me that the USB twine labored as a charger... Is this actual? Because I've had it plugged in and on for the final hour, and its nonetheless a lifeless battery. Also, it didn't include a handbook, in order that's why I'm asking. Thank you in...
