This question may be abit late, but RJJ seems to be the real deal int erms of commentating. He is not 80 yrs old so he is able to see which punches do and no not land, and also having been an elite fighter, he is able to give us insights that the rest can't.
Just have a listen at RJJ schooling Merchant and Lampley at the Pacquiao-Marquez 4 bout.

Yea boxers always make the best commentators. I cant stand antonio tarver but he was the only showtime commentator that didnt annoy me and now its pauli malignagcudbfoagsb lol.
But yea Roy to me is pretty much the best commentator they have right now. Max Kellerman is great 90% of the time. The other 10% of the time he can get pretty dumb when he trys to run to far with a point hes trying to make. Usually happens when he gets biased.
Jones is good...but the "I been boxing you havent" line he spits sometimes is just sour and off putting....was funny though....but it kinda kills the mood in the commentary booth between the rest of the team
Emmanuel Stewart was the best (RIP)
He could give accurate boxing insight...but he wasn't all up his own a$$ like some former fighters turned commentators usually are including Jones
Plus when the time called for it, he could come up with a OH MY GAWD or two
I hope Roy Jones Jr is a commentator for every important fight. He's 10,000 times better then Joe Rogan fake @ss is for the MMGay sport. They need to get rid of Joe rogan despirately..
Who knows he may be the head of the HBO commentory department once Merchant retires.
I a lot of boxing experts. Foreman is good too.
i always prefer fighter commenentators, and i like RJ the best
