Through the advent of the internet,starting with Napster,we have a generation of people now downloading illegally copywritten material. I have heard the gossip stating the demise of good music having alot to do with that. I dont believe a word of it,because it doesnt make sence,and it would only correlate to one genre,rock,..because,truth be told,the last supergroup to really set the rock world on fire was Nirvana. This doesnt seem to really effect the hip-hop world,because there seems to be no end to popular music there.
Tell me why we havent seen a MAJOR sucessfull supergroup like nirvana or guns n roses in many years
Oh,the reason I feel it CANT be about monetary reasons like copyright infringement is because bands dont play incredible music for the love of money,its the love of music!!

I don't think it's monetary, either. I do believe perhaps it has to do with the fact that there are tons of choices for music these days. Not that Rap and R&B weren't popular in Nirvana's day, but it's waaay more popular now than it once was. Right now, Rock isn't really the huge 'moneymaker' it's always been accustomed to being, so maybe it's not necessarily that there aren't great bands playing out there, it's just there's alot more music competing for fans. 5 or 10 years from now, this will probably change yet again, as music always tends to do.

Rock's popularity has rocketed down..
There is wider choice of music now.. Indie Rock..indie pop.. RnB..hip hop.. Dance..pop.
But the market for LIVE music has gone up though (dont know if that is a fact)
Tours were always the biggest way to make money for bands.. and it has gone up even more now.
I think more sales depend both on originality and marketing.
Nirvana , R.E.M gained on the grunge invasion.
Green day/No Doubt on the punk invasion.
Popular rock bands now are Panic at the Disco and MCR..
They have plenty of fans.. But many of which are very young.. CD sales for them that's why has been low as kids usually listen's to friends CDs or go on youtube/myspace..
If they were on the brink of a new invasion and had original music they would get the attention of audience of many ages and get more record sales.
Internet has also been quite involved in this -Myspace/youtube is a platform for bands to advertise music and get fans, but not necessarily CD sales.
I have no idea. Bands are trying to start screamo bands, and they don't understand that people don't really like them. They have givin up on all good material, and they have been writing cheesey songs with repetitive music that is no fun to listin to. Maybe sometime in the near future, a new good band will emerge.
Agreed about Nirvana.
There's still plenty of great rock being made, just that I think most of it is by indie bands now. Mainstream rock bands, for the most part, aren't breaking new ground right now.
