I just got back from the dentist and I have horrible gums. The dentist says I need to floss more but I'm absolutely horrible at flossing and end up hurting myself. My aunt recommend a waterpik...but will a waterpik do the same as flossing or does it not do as well?

Waterpiks will work just a thoroughly as dental floss, as long as you use them correctly. The waterpik is actually in some areas better then the floss. One of the areas where the Waterpik wins over standard string flossing is in removing biofilm. Think of biofilm as a coating of super plaque, a tough-to-clean bacterial layer that can cause tooth decay and be very hard to strip away.
Waterpik Vs Flossing
Dental floss can remove plaque manually and do a good result for gum and teeth. If you know the correct and easiest technique of flossing it will not be horrible for your. You can see some video tutorial about how to floss.
NO....As an experiment, just try making use of the water pik and nothing else for a day or two. You'll see that it doesn't remove plaque from the teeth. It simply removes debris that is free. Floss will get the plaque off between your enamel the same way a toothbrush will get it off from the surfaces.
