Being over 40, I am always interested in knowing what women my age consider when buying make-up. What do you wear and why? At this age our skin has begun to change so much that what worked when we were younger sometimes doesn't do the trick anymore so what products do you think is a must have?
I've recently started using the mineral type make-up from Bare Essentuals but wonder about this make-up that Avon now has that has age-defying stuff in it to make your skin look better...does it really work? I recently started using Avon's new "Magix" face perfector which is awesome.
What about the Liquid eye make-up? Do you feel it smooths out the lines better or does it look cakey when you wear it? Or is powder still the smoother advantage? Not expecting all my questions to get answered here just interested in hearing your ideas! Thanks!

I'm in my 40s. I wear Bare Minerals foundation, but my new love is Avon Beyond Color Line Softening Mousse Foundation. It goes on like silk and creates a perfectly smooth and even complexion. It's pretty miraculous. For eye makeup, I use Benefit Primer Potion on my lids before I apply my eyeshadow, and I use powder eyeshadow. Creams look cakey and make your lids look wrinkled. The Primer Potion makes even the cheapest eyeshadow look great and last all day. My other must have is Burt's Bees Radiance Day Cream. I am on bottle number five now, and I can't live without it. It's all natural, has royal jelly in it, and is the best rich, non-greasy moisturizer on the market.
I agree that it is a make-up maze out there LOL. I can only share my experience with you. I am 61, and recently had to be "Mother of the Bride". Any make-up I owned (most of it had dried up anyway) was from the 70's. I didn't use a moisturiser underneath. I found it made the foundation streaky. (I had a number of practise runs) I used an under eye product first, to conceal puffiness. I used a concealer stick on large skin flaws. Then, I used a stick foundation, but put it on with a damp sea-sponge. I used powder eye shadow, in three shades of lavender, and put it on with a brush. Powder blush in a very neutral shade, also put on with a brush.; black pencil eye-liner and black voluminising mascara. I used a lip product around my lips to stop the lipstick "bleeding", which is a horrible look. Then, a lip "stain" which stays on for hours and hours. I found that at my age, less is definitely more!
I have heard only good things about the new mineral face products.
I had a chat to my doctor about skin care. He said that defoliation, exposing fresh skin, is the way to go. He also said that it really doesn't matter what skin care you are using. It is the fact that you are paying some kind of daily attention to your skin which counts!
Quality skin care and makeup are a must. It may be a little more expensive, but it is worth the extra cost for younger more radiant looking skin. Decleor skin care and Chanel skin care are wonderful for your skin and both are rich in natural botanicals - you can get a more personalized skincare system than just "oily, normal or dry" along with some excellent anti-aging serums and moisturizers that are specifically targeted for your skin's stage of aging. Use a foundation, preferably liquid, that is specifically for your skin type and matches your skin exactly - also a dewy finish looks healthy and beautiful on dryer skin. Mineral makeup is very good for your skin. Blush should compliment your skin (not match your lipstick) and is considered part of your foundation - go for something very natural in color that matches the undertones in your skin. I would stay away from liquid eye makeup. Shadows should compliment your eyes, hair and skin tone. Try using a combination of matte and shimmer (no high frost) on your eyes.
I switched from liquid foundation to mineral powder foundation a couple of years ago and my skin looks a lot better. I don't use liner or eye shadow anymore, just mascara. One light coat. I use a little peach blush and red Christian Dior lipstick. It's expensive, but it's the only one I have found that stays on. Color-stay doesn NOT stay and I feel washed out without color on my lips.I am lucky not to have wrinkles except for a slight one in between my brows. I want to try Roc wrinkle cream but I can't seem to find it anywhere.
my mom is 44 and i am like her fashion expert assistant when she shops. i told her about the bare essentuals and she uses that too. its really great for your skin and i think for any age its good to look natural and not put heavy make up on. also the Purity line is good. lots of age-defing stuff there that works according to my mom. also a really good tip i know for 'blossoming' (nice way to say midle aged i guess. but remember, 40 is the new 30s :]) is to wear bright colored blush. you may not think this would work but i does, it really lightens up the face and its all about the application. also always wear sunscreen. and never wear mommy jeans (light wash jeans with elastic waist band) :]
and if you want more tips watch What Not to Wear on TLC every friday. lots of makeup tips and hair tips and clothing tips for people of your age. gl (good luck)
I use Bare Minerals and love it.Loreal makes a mineral makeup that is good also. My daughter just gave me Avon Supershock mascara and its the best mascara I have ever used. No clumping, but long lashes.
I'm not in my 40's, but my mom is. She discovered early in life that if she just wore lipstick it looked like she'd spent quite some time on her make-up. What she looks for in a lipstick is color and "stay put ability" especially since she has no pigment in her lips (she was in an accident some years ago).
