I have a 2002 dodge durango automatic and recently when I was at a stop sign I accelerated on the gas pedal normally not gunning it or anything and the car gave extra acceleration surge I guess you would say. And the check engine light came on. Does anyone know what this could be?

The thing to do when the check engine light comes on is to have an OBD2 check done to- you guessed it- check the engine. Several things can cause surge, and you don't want to start throwing money in the car without knowing what part is troublesome. The OBD2 trouble code will say what's wrong.
The Engine Control Unit may have switched into a different mode of operation due to some problem.
Most shops will have an OBD (on board diagnostic) code reader and can connect it to your ECU and read out the error code(s). That may help diagnose the problem, if there is one. BTW, some shops will read out the code for free, hoping that you'll let them fix any problems that are detected.
They can hook up a computer scanner to get the check engine light error code to find out what is wrong.
I'm guessing the throttle position sensor.
one of your o2 sensors went out
