When I play counter strike source, it says my software is DirectX 9.0 but my hardware only supports up to DirectX 8. I have an Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 128 Mb card. On the box of my card it says that it supports directX 9.0. Can someone tell if my card supports DirectX 9.0, or have I been playing with DirectX 8.0 graphics this whole time?

It runs a cut down version of DirectX9 but it isn't sufficient in many games such as Halflife2 and CS:S which will default to using DirectX8.
It is not the full shader model 3 of the DirectX9c standard. Only SM2 but too slow at it to be of any use in most games.
You can check what version your DirectX really is. Click "Start", click "Run" and type "dxdiag" to run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Under "System" tab, you can verify what version of your DirectX. In case, you see that the version is 8.0, you can upgrade it to 9.0 by upgrading your OS online. If you do, the drivers in your OS will also be upgraded. Otherwise, go to the tech site of NVidia GeForce FX5500 and download its upgraded driver. Install it, then run the "dxdiag" again.
If the card says it supports DX9 then that's what it will use providing the game also supports DX9.
Usually when you download a game from software it will update your directX to the appropriate version if it is newer than your current one.
even an integrated card on the mother board supports directx 10 the graphics will just look grainy looking and pixilized
If DX9 runs, it's supported!
If DX9 runs it is supported.
