Someone gave me an old 2GHZ Intel Core Duo with a 2GB RAM for free. The CD-drive is having some issues so I won't be able to upgrade the OS via CD. It's currently running on Tiger 10.4.11 and I would like to upgrade it to Leopard or Snow Leopard. But I only have a .dmg installer file that I downloaded on my Windows 8 laptop. I want to transfer it to my iMac via USB and upgrade the OS. This is my first Mac computer and I have no idea how to begin. Can someone give me an idea how to install it via USB?

Depending on exactly which model iMac you have it can run OSX 10.6.8 or OSX 10.7.5. You'll need to buy the 10.6.x install dvd from Apple and use an external dvd rom or another Mac via firewire to install it to your iMac. To get 10.7.5 you still need to buy 10.6.8 to get the App Store. You can only buy 10.7 from the App Store as a download for installation.
