I have a 72 Gibson Les Paul Custom, plays great, sounds even better, but if you play it live, you need a chiropractor the next day for the back strain. I'll stick to my Ibanez, or Kramer. They sound just almost as good, play about the same, but with out all the weight.
While I have played many Les Pauls, I don't own one. However, I do have a custom built copy that replicates a '58 standard. Only thing I had changed was the neck, it's more of a '60s profile but I had them leave it raw.
I have played many, liked only one. Gibson guitars are mediocre but heavily overpriced, and everything they have is the cosmetics. You can get one good sound that is useful sometimes, but out-of-place all other times. So I gave up and for the price of one Gibson got a good Ibanez and a Carvin and each of them kicks Gibson's butt all over the place.
Used to have a Double Cutaway Standard with a flame maple carved top - beautiful! Sold it because it was too small for my hands and fingers. And yes, now I have my guitars made for me to fit my hands exactly! Is THAT bitchin' or what?
Gibsons will always be legends, but custom axes RULE!!!
I've owned over 20 in my life...that's why I'm broke! I have one left and it's my baby. A 2006 Standard. Check out my axes at www.myspace.com/kevinmusik.

I have a bass guitar which is a Korean copy of the Hofner bass that Paul McCartney played with the Beatles - I call it my Less Paul
