I suspect that you might not have installed KDE in ubuntu fully and are therefore having problems.It is best to install the full compliment of KDE packages (kubuntu-desktop). See the first link.

If you want a pure KDE distro, I recommend that you give Chakra Linux a run http://www.chakra-project.org/ .

If it has to be Debian, then go here http://www.debian.org/CD/live/ and download the KDE version.

Mepis would be another good choice http://www.mepis.org/mirrors . I have used mepis before and really liked it.
