This is my second time asking a question on here--I hope I don't get torn apart. I saw a question about parental advisory CDs, asking if the mother should get them for her daughter. I understand people have concern but I don't understand why. I believe in free thinking and letting my kids express themselves. I have raised my children knowing that art (lyrics, poems, stories, and films) are not always based on real life and not to take them literally. Why should we hold our children back from the music they feel like listening to, whether that be, Marilyn Manson, Hillary Duff, Brittany Spears, Slipknot, SOAD, The Backstreet Boys, or John Lennon? Shouldn’t we be raising our children to be free thinkers and let them feel liberated by their own music choices?

I agree with you, movies now a days are just as bad with the cussing and everything. I hear kids all the time talking and if they don't hear those words from music then they will hear it from them. So no matter how much we try and shelter our kids, they are bound to hear it so I think letting them have those Cd's fine. As long as you tell them not to use those words in day to day life.
I agree with you. I'm not a parent, but I was parented in a way that allowed me to read and listen to whatever I wanted- which did include some cds with a parental advisory. I'd like to think I turned out alright. I've been married for just over a year and am 1 year away from finishing college with a BFA in painting.
So art has only affected me in a good way!:)
I agree with you. As long as you teach them what's right and wrong, there shouldn't be a problem with the words they are hearing. Just support your children in making good decisions in their lives, and you'll be fine. Seems like you want to raise some open minded children. That's good.
My mother believed the same thing. None of us (I have two older siblings) became serial killers, rapists, or drug dealers as a result of watching or hearing uncensored material. It all needs to be backed up with some good parenting and education.
(On a side note... that answer written in all caps is seriously annoying.)
My hubby & I argue about this. He begins to think I am blaming the music - which I am not. He believes it is the parents responsibility. I agree. The reason I agree with censorship is that I am worried about the children listening & watching certain things, but they don't have any parents guiding them. At least you are there to teach your kids about the difference between real life & entertainment. I am concerned about the children who don't have that guidance.
My parents always allowed me to listen to all kinds of music, and it was never an issue with them if I heard somebody cuss in a song. I had loads of different Cd's, including rap, punk rock and heavy metal, and most probably had parental advisory stickers. It hasn't done me any harm whatsoever. I think as long as you're bringing them up right, it's totally fine, music can enrich their lives in so many ways. :-)
i agree with you the only problem is that some parents are 'too liberal' and might alow the children to say all those words all the time and they end up being direspectful which is not right. so to a parent that can teach repect as well as being free thinkers more power to you but some parents do not do so.
I agree with you to a certain extent. However, you don't really need your 10 year old singing about sex and drugs. I remember singing lil' kim when I was like 14, and I hear the lyrics now from that cd and can't BELIEVE I was allowed to listen to it. It's all personal oppinions/values I guess.
Some say that people started doing the things eminem talked about in his songs. They started killing, doing drugs, quiting school and so much more. I think its how the he or she is going to take it. Its up to you though.
If only all parents had the same views you the world would be a better place.
I THINK THEY TOO HAVE THERE DIFFERENT OPINIONS.BUT YOU COULD GUIDE THEM IN CHOOSING THE RIGHT THINGS.REMEMBER,WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS, WE HAVE EMOTIONS THAT WE CANNOT CONTROL BY OUR SELVES,WE NEED OTHERS POINT-OF-VIEWS.JUST LET THEM BE COMFORTABLE IN HAVING OPEN CONVERSATIONS WITH YOU, O.K
