Hi all. I have a typical pc atx power supply (working) laying around and i decided to plug it directly into the wall (by wall i mean surge protector) because i wanted to listen to how loud it was. I did this without plugging the 20+4 connector into a motherboard. like i said, i directly plugged it into the surge protector. The fan never spun up, at least i didnt see it spin up and die. I expected the unit to spin up, but it never did.
Did I just completely annihilate my PSU? or is this normal? if I did, why did that happen? And if I didn't, how come the fan doesn't spin up?

Plug it into a motherboard or PSU tester.

Even a extreme-power laptop purely attracts a small volume of power. while you're in usa then your power outlet is around 125V. interior something of the international this is going to be 250V. a pc power grant has one purpose - to take that mains grant and throttle all of it the way down to the 12V and 5V mandatory for the laptop factors. short version: sure you are able to plug it right into a power strip.
No you didn't hurt it. I think only the really old old power supplies (like 2001 and earlier) will powerup like that. The power supply will detect when the power button ( a momentary pushbutton switch) is pressed before it powers up. I think you just missed getting it fired up by not having it plugged in.
I think it only spins as a cooling mechanism, when it senses that it's getting too hot.
