First answerer is retarded. I play that game all the time. Most of the time I catch a Pidgey. Or I just wait til I get to Rock Tunnel and catch a Nidoran (male) or Mankey, or Cerulean city and catch an Abra. All the other pokemon (mostly bug and normal) are too weak by the time the Elite four comes around and theres no point in getting them to high levels.

Pidgey, it makes a good secondary partner and useful against the rival later on.
