Long story short, my problem is that my computer has been getting noticeably slower recently, and as i am going to have to use it quite intensively in the coming months, I've decided to upgrade it. I am planning to replace my fan, hard disc and to invest in more RAM. The problem is that i don't know too much about what will work with what.
I have already purchased a Samsung 840 series SSD (250gb), but any advice regarding the other components would be much appreciated - I'm going to need at least 16gb of RAM.
I should add, my PC currently has an I7 950 Intel processor, ASUSTeK Computer INC. P6X58D-E (LGA1366) motherboard and Windows 8 ios.
Lastly, should my CPU be always be up around 70 degrees celsius? Is this healthy?

I7 950 is getting old.I recommend you to get an Asus P9D-V motherboard and a Xeon E3-1230V3 processor.Haswell goodness,Server reliability.Get a Hyper 212 for it.
I recommend the Xeon and the server motherboard as they are more resilient to higher temperature.
RAM upgrade is not really necessary. If you really want probably some ECC unregistered will be great, will reduce data loss by a great percentage. There are only 1333MHz ECC dimms since 1600MHz and onwards are overclock speeds which reduces stability and reliability.
Some may say these are overkill or not worth it.However i disagree,The Xeon E3 is like an 4770 but is cheaper by a huge margin.furthermore the Motherboard is priced around a standard Z87 motherboard so why not get it.
Also i have a few consumer motherboards that just burned down due to problems like incompetent VRMs,or blown CAPs.Server items are further tested one by one to ensure they are certified.
ECC can save a lot of trouble, especially when video editing.
However these will not allow Sli and Crossfire. If you have those config, then go with consumer grade products. However if you plan to Sli or Crossfire,i suggest you forget about it,buying a new stronger card makes more sense,as sli 2 old cards can draw a ton of power, and the final cost is same or more while having less performance.
So yeah,
You probably need to dust your computer, and re apply thermal past. My CPU idles around 25C, and goes up to 47C under max load. (FX8350 running F@H).
Also, the things you bought won't really improve your performance. It sounds like you need to trim services or reinstall/defeat windows, and clean your CPU/GPU son that thermal restrictions won't kick in and slow their clock rates.
