My friend and I decided to play D&D because she had the started kit. We're still in the process of making our characters and near the end when it came to invading the goblins den to get back some stolen treasure the box didn't tell us what to do. We already learned how to fight but it didn't tell us how to start the encounter. It said that we could eaither kill all the goblins, runaway or sneak past them and then move to what ever option number you chose. Are we souposed to just choose and move to what number they told us to or actually fight them. We wanted to sneak past them but we don't know how to tell if we've been caught and what not. Thank you for you help.

It's up to you to choose which option you want to try. The book is giving you examples of the things that can happen in the game run by an experienced DM, even for people that are new to the game as both DMs and Players.
I don't have this particular book, so I don't know quite what it says, but if you choose the Sneak Past option it'll probably give you information on how to make a Sneak roll. You'll have to roll a d20 and see if your Sneak skill helps you pass by the room that the Goblins are in. It'll tell you what happens next if you pass or fail the test and what to do next.
For instance it might say that you sneak past successfully and now you have the treasure that was stolen. You can choose to sneak past again, but this time with the additional weight of the treasure it'll be harder to do so because of the extra noise you'd make.
Or if you fail you might have to fight all the goblins, and give them a chance to attack first.
Like I said I don't have that particular book so I don't know what it says, but those are what I think are the two most obvious options. I hope this has been helpful.
Happy Gaming.
