I just want to change the dead bolt lock cylinder on my house side door. The tenant moved and has not returned the key. He lives a distance away now and will return it when he comes to the city. I just would feel better getting a new key.

Hi If you know the make and size you can get a new cylinder on line most are interchangeable and it is very easy to change if you find you have a problem you can always put the old one back, I have done quite a few and providing you get the right replacement cylinder you should have no problems you may need a small hacksaw to cut the little flat plate I always use the old one , the new one usually comes with the fitting instructions.

Don't just get any lock. Make sure it is a grade 2 or grade 1 lock. They cost more but offer more protection. If this is something you want done quickly just buy a whole new lockset. In your spare time disassemble the other one to see how it works. Then if you need to change it out in the future you may be able to just swap out the core.
Some Basic Truths
1. A lock is only as good as the door and frame in the opening!
2. A lock keeps the honest person honest!
3. Every system has a weakness!
4. You get what you pay for!
Good Luck.
Bob wants a Job is over-complicating the issue. You can replace the ENTIRE lock with about the same effort for about the cost of SHIPPING an internet order. By ANY deadbolt locally and there is a 90% chance you can change only the portion visible form the outside. WORST case, you spend an extra 2 minutes removing and replacing the entire lock. If you can operate a screwdriver and follow instruction designed for a 4th grader, you should have no problem.
undo the screws to remove the old lock as long as the deadbolt is the same size you should just be able to put it in the same hole and screw it together
just get down on your knees and pound it out with your forehead.
