Hi,
I own a KLR600 A-1 (1984), it has a rear drum brake & front disc brake. I was wondering, I would like to install road tyres onto the bike sometime in the near future. The bike currently has Knobbly / Off-Road tyres on which cause abit of drag. Bikes such as the DRZ400E and the DRZ400SM, from what I've heard, the wheels can be interchangeable between the two so you can have both styled wheels for the Off-Road version and visa versa. I know there are road tyres such as continental etc are available for my bike, but what about the Supermoto (17 Inch) kind of wheels? I kinda prefer these as it also brings the seat height down a little, helps me feel more stable I guess, and in my opinion looks better. Does anybody know if there are some road bike wheels that will fit straight on (Possibly something like the ER-5 1996/7 wheels)? Or most likely, will I have to modify them? Thank You.

You could always have a set of KLR hubs laced to a smaller rim – you would be limited by clearance as to the width you could go – but you should be able to use the brake set up as it is now. I am sure there are alternate wheels that would fit but the problem always seems to be getting the space on the rear to align sprockets, your problem would be compounded by the drum brake.
