It's (most likely) normal! Know that you're not alone. I get these, too, usually on the first one or two days of menstruation
I would suggest some sort of pain reliever for the pain.
I ended up getting anemic (in simple terms, weak from all the blood loss), so I started taking an iron supplement during my period. This helped greatly in preventing me from fainting, but caused minor constipation. It did not, however, prevent the clots from occurring. Birth control would be the best option for that.
For a while, my mother would not let me be on birth control despite the immense pain and heavy bleeding I was having, because she thought I would start "whoring it up." Once I turned 18, I started on birth control (Kariva, in particular) and it was a God-send. Periods became lighter (although there were still some clots) and the cramps almost went away.
blood clots can be normal but it depends on how small or large they are and their color. If you are bleeding excessively or going through supplies in an hour or less than that's considered heavy bleeding. Since you are also in pain and you've had two kids you may have a medical condition that's causing this. For me I had a history of endometriosis found two years before I got pregnant and then after my second and third child the pain got worse and bleeding was very heavy. When you see the dr. make sure you tell him how many things you go through because women can say they have heavy bleeding and dr's may think that women are just saying that. Try to estimate the size of the clots like from the size of an apple seed, dime, quarter, strawberry, fist, etc. Many small dark clots with other larger clots can possibly mean endometriosis adenomyosis (endometriosis in the uterine muscle), fibroids, hormonal imbalances, or other things. Also how long your bleeding days are may mean you are bleeding to long. I had ten day to two week bleeding days and went through super plus tampons in twenty minutes before my hysterectomy. There are many treatments to treat heavy bleeding so hysterectomies are not the only choice. If you have fibroids and want more kids a dr. can remove them leaving you free to still become pregnant. There's also an outpatient procedure called Thermachoice but that's usually left for people who don't want anymore kids. If over the counter Ibuprofen doesn't work well enough for the pain ask your dr. to give you something else. I held off on my hysterectomy for a year before I was 100% sure I didn't want anymore kids and also wanted a better quality of life that bleeding or pain didn't prevent me from enjoying. If a dr. tells someone they are to young for a hysterectomy get a second opinion because depending on what's going on is what's important not age. Feel free to contact me. Hope you feel better.
Edited to say... If you want you can check out www.hystersisters.com as they have an alternative to hysterectomy message board where questions don't go unanswered, a pre-op, post-op, hormone, living without hormone therapy option boards and so much more. They give a lot of support to everyone. I also discovered I could have my hysterectomy done vaginally without an abdominal cut with a spinal and epidural for post op pain relief so no general anesthesia was required
