Going to Bangkok Dec 26, 2008 coming back Jan 4, 2009, at least that's what my ticket says for now. That was before I lost my job. Now that I don't have those days ::ahem:: occupied, I figured I could extend my vacation a bit since I already paid for the expensive plane ticket.
Called Expedia today 3 different times to change the return date to Jan 13 and was given different prices and different flight times each time. Price increase ranged from $234 to $338.
One of the people I called suggested I fly into Bangkok, then go straight to the China Airlines counter and change the return date right then and there. This way I'd be able to save $35 on the processing fee that Expedia charges to change the dates and I'd be able to keep my current departure times which apparently I'll lose if I decide to alter my return date.
Has anyone ever done this before? It sounds risky to me. I've never done it before. I'm seeing all these bad scenarios like having to pay $500 more to change the date or having to go through 3 more stops or something ridiculous like that. Or even worse, they don't have anymore flights for Jan 13.
I'm actually quite flexible. I don't have to come back Jan 13. I could come back Jan 12, or 11. If worse comes to worse I have my return date for Jan 4 set in stone but that would suck because I want to stay longer.

That's normally one of the busiest times of the year for travel to and from Thailand. This January could be an exception with the government protests going on which has severely affected tourism. The prices you were quoted seem on the high side, but depending on the restrictions of your ticket, may be in line. Who knows for sure if the flights will be full or what exactly they might charge you here in Bangkok? Have you tried calling China Airlines directly? I have a friend here who missed his flight on China Airlines and had to pay only a $100 penalty to reschedule which makes $234-$338 seem very expensive. I think giving China Airlines a call would be the best and most accurate way of determining what you'll need to pay and how full the flights are, good luck.
