Yeah I'm pretty impressed on how I threw that sentence together, so I know it doesn't stand out. I'm in basic Spanish and my teacher was going over the times, like es la una y son las. I just don't really understand how you know when to use the right one. Es la is before 12 pm and son las is after? Or how does it work? 8:15 AM would be es la una ocho y cuatro de la mañana? Or can you say it some other way? Gracias guys :)

Think of it like this: one o'clock is singular and two thru 12 are plural sooooo,
Es la una y media = 1:30
Son las dos y cuarto = 2:15
Hopefully that helps!
Es is for singular / Son is for plural
8.15 AM Son las ocho y cuarto de la manana
1.15 AM Es la una y cuarto de la manana
We use "es" just with 1 . All the other numbers are plural.

The previous answer is correct. "Es la" is used for times beginning in "one" (1:00, 1:30, 1:59). "Son las" is used for all the other times. It does not matter whether the time is AM or PM.
