The EX and GX are slightly different models, but I wouldn't say that one is better than the other. Both cost the same and use the same materials and have the same neck profiles. Where they differ is the finish and pickups. The GX is red and has Gibson Dirty Finger pickups. The EX is black and has EMG pickups. Both were designed for metal and other music styles that use a lot of distortion. You'd have to try both out to get a better feel for which sound you prefer.

In the latest Guitar World, they said that both were comparable with guitars that cost 2, 3, or 4 times as much. If metal is your thing, you should check them out. If you want alternatives, I'd give Ibanez, Schecter, and ESP a look. They have a lot of guitars in that price range made for metal.
