the video cards memory is completely separate to the system RAM so you can one that is 512MB if you wanted just make sure that the connection is the same as the motherboard
it will either be AGP or PCI express (if the computer is newer than 2 years)
i would consider upping the RAM as well to increase performance for games like COD4 and also what CPU do you have?
spec requirements for COD 4 are:

You need to upgrade your RAM to at least 2GB (can be done for under $50).
Then, any videocard you purchase can have any amount of RAM you choose as long as your power supply has enough power for the size of the card and you have the right type of slots.
for video card i bought a Nvidia Geforce 8400 gs for this game and works great in medium settings
after overclocking (don't advice can burn ur card) i can run it on high settings it's cheap and good for medium settings and some games low and for ram i have 1 gb ram it's the min these days if u r going to spend some extra cash i advice u to get a better video card cuz after a while u will need to upgrade and a 2 gb ram
you need a videocard but also need a core 2 duo processor
2 gb of ram. 512 mb video card will work here
Call of Duty 4 will not run on your system with 256mb of Ram.
Sorry.
