I think schools are required by law to have a dress code, so it absolutely is not "whatever you want". It doesn't look super formal or uptight, so not collared t-shirts either.
So, your best bet would be to walk in on the first day wearing something modest, and ASK.
Usually your rules of thumb are:
• Shorts, skirts, and dresses have to be fingertip length
• Tight shorts, skirts, and dresses must be worn with a top that is fingertip length (aka covering your butt)
• no spaghetti straps or articles of clothing baring midriff
• common sense .... don't wear violent t-shirts, etc.
If you happen to violate dress code by an offchance on the first day, you won't get in trouble. Ask your friends and neighbors if they know as well.
