I have a 1998 dodge neon. A few weeks ago the speedometer started intermittently working. I just figured it was a speed sensor or even the cluster, it didn't bother me much. Today, on my way to work all the gauges were sporadic and intermittently working and the battery light was on. On my lunch break the battery light came on, gauges were sporadic, radio was going on and off, dinger was coming on and off, and the headlights were flickering when i was sitting still. I ran it down to the parts store to have the alternator checked, the gut told me that it the voltage regulator was causing the alternator to over charge, so he sold me a new one. When i got home, the new alternator says it is externally regulated by the car's computer. My problem is. i don't want to put a one hundred dollar alternator on the car and ir not fix it. Nor do i want to put a 250 dollar computer on it, and it not fix the problem. Can anyone offer advice or help me with this problem? Anything would be greatly appreciated , Thank you.
Update:On my way home from the parts store the car was back to everything working but the speedometer. It was still acting sporadic.

If I were you I would buy an online service manual for the neon, it should show you all the procedures, diagrams, and everything you need to know about the car:

I would go back to the auto parts place and clarify what you read on the package. His diagnostics said the regulator was causing the alternator to over charge. So if what he sold you does not fix the problem, will he take it back. Get that clarified before you go any further.
On you gauges acting up. It is no surprise since everything is digital now. So a low voltage condition can cause problems just as an over voltage condition can. Until your fix one problem, you can't fix the next. Good luck. I hope my support helped.
Get a haynes guide at the nearby parts store, $25 and get into the wiring dagrams and likewise buy a experiment gentle ($10). They aren't related. So get in there and figure this out... ASE Cert Auto tech, for the reason that 1978, 95 and 98 Neons
