I am working on the transmission for my 94 explorer 4wd. I have heard that the transfer case takes Mercon V fluid.
My questions are whether or not the fluid flows to the transfer case from the transmission? If it does, do i need to tear the transfer case apart in order to clean it? I am asking because the fluid was about the color of used motor oil. (in both the tranny and transf)
Is there anything else that i should tear apart to clean so that i do not contaminate the new fluid when i eventually get everything back together? Would a transmission flush from a local lube shop suffice instead of taking everything apart.
I know that there are alot of questions here, but i am curious, and do not want to make extra work for myself if i do not need to.
Thank you
I will choose a best answer.
Update:yes, the transfer case is separate from the bell housing. The transfer case is on the rear of the transmission, the bell housing is on the front. (near the engine)

fluid in the transfer case is not supposed to flow to the transmission or visa-versa, mercon five is chosen for that box because it will reduce the noises and wear onside. it will cahnge color as it ages, just like atf always does. ending up looking like engine oil is normal. i believe that ford recommends that the fluid be replaced every 30,000 miles on that car/truck.
the transfer case is apart from the bell housing
