Probably going to get one of these to replace my epiphone les paul studio (not much to look at and is my first guitar and would like an upgrade). From a technical standpoint which is better? Which pickups are better? Alnico Classics (standard) vs Probucker (custom)? I want a versatile guitar (since all my other ones are built for just metal) and am not ready to drop $1000 on a gibson so epiphone is going to have to do for now.

Depends a bit on what sort of standard you're referring to. The specs here suggests a Custom pro versus a regular standard. If this is the case, then I'd go with the Custom.
If you'd compare the Custom to a Standard Plus Top, then I'd personally get the standard. I tend to favor the sound (in Gibson, that is) of a Standard over a Custom.
That said, I'm not particularly fond of Epiphone as a whole - very unreliable in my experience. Also, the build quality is so and so. OK for the price, but nothing more.
One brand that gets to score all around - build quality, materials, finish and set-up - and which will set you back just a fraction more than the Epiphone, is Agile: http://www.learnelectricguitarnow.net/agile-electr...
I have a couple of really good Gibson guitars. However, the Agile is really very close - the materials is even better in some respects. Can't recommend them enough.
