Exactly and specifically how do I upload video recorded on a JVC video camera (model GR-D270u) to my computer? I have read something about a "firewire" but I have no idea what that is. I have also read that some computers do not have a firewire port, and I still have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. My computer is a dell and it is windows XP (that is all I know). Please help because I have a lot of videos I would like to upload and send to my friends and family.

The video capture process is very simple. The link below has a detailed step-by-step process including how to determine if your computer has a firewire port.
well if you do not know what a firewire is, chances are you do not have one.
you need not only a firewire, but the software to actually capture the video and a program to edit said footage and then software to author to DVD if you want to watch it on a TV.
I suggest you take your tape to a photo refinishing store and have them put it on DVD for you. so much cheaper and easier.
