For Christmas my parents got me a HP Pavillion p6230y. I wanted to build a gaming computer but the moneys not there so my parents decided to be nice and try to buy me a cheap one on sale. The specs are low end for a gaming computer but i thought i might be able to make up for that by overclocking. Id like to know if i could over clock this thing to get a somewhat decent effect for new upcoming games like mass effect 2 and The Old Republic. If im gonna be stuck with a regular work desktop id rather save my parents the $530 they spent and return it. Im just average gamer who gets in around 6-10 hours a week on xbox and computer so should this be good enough?

You can go into bios to see if the options needed to overclock exist. If it allows you to adjust the core and memory voltages and front side bus speeds, it can be overclocked. It's more than likely that they don't, those options are usually only found in high end oem systems and custom rigs. The specs in that system aren't really that bad, 2.6GHz Phenom II quad, 8GB DDR3, a pci-e x16 slot and 300W ATX power supply. A 2.6GHz quad may not be screaming fast, but a lot of people are using a lesser processor than that to game with. All you need to do is to get a decent graphics card and a power supply that can support it and your system, and then game on. It's do-able.
I even have my doubts... whilst it has a "discrete-classification" video, they do no longer say it is unquestionably actual discrete. they do no longer checklist discrete memory, only shared video memory, which i've got confidence would be sluggish. The video is consequently only "ok". it is a "funds computing gadget", no longer designed for any extreme gaming.
