I want to paint kitchen but I'm not sure of the new color trends. The tile floor is white as well as the cabinets. The counter tops are a slate blue/grey. Right now the wall color is light yellow.
I was going to say red but you described the counter tops as slate blue/grey. Red, white and blue is a little too Americana, which is great, but not a "new color trend".
Blue or a shade of light purple might be nice. It won't clash with the counters.
OR I have a beige/orange color next to my blue/grey counter top. Not everyone would like it but I LOVE it!
It totally depends on personal preference. What rooms are adjacent to the kitchen? Are they brightly painted? Do you want the paint color in the kitchen to serve as an accent for your home? Without knowing anything else about your home, I can say this...if you are looking to make a dramatic statement, some variation of orange would do the trick. On the color wheel, orange is a direct complement of blue, and would be flattering with your counter tops. I'm not talking day-glo orange, but maybe a more muted version...terracotta, adobe, rust, or even peach.
I think going deeper would be best...a darker, butterscotch gold color would be great. Or, maybe a mocha. Add punches of color with artwork. Check out vintage cooking posters from www.allposters.com.

I think that sounds pretty right now. Are you wanting a change?
What direction does your room face and do you have lots of windows?
If you have sun and light, you could go darker. If it is small and on the dark (north) side, I would keep it light and bright.

My mother-in-law put in a slate blue/grey floor in her bathroom. She painted a lavender/light purple color and it looks awesom!
