1/12 + a negative number means you are subtracting ...1/12 - 7/12 ...
1-7 = -6
so -6/12 -- simplified (-1/2)
Adding a negative is the same as subtracting. So your example is the same as:
(1/12) - (7/12)
With mixed numbers convert them to simply fractions first, then add, subtract, multiply, etc.
Example: 3 and 1/2 is the same as 7/2
