You know, Mario 2 was revealed at the end to be a dream. Mario 3 was a play. Was Mario 1 the same way? I don't remember beating it so I wouldn't know.

Hence we arrive at the conclusion that, yes, Super Mario Bros 1 is fantasy.
And if you mean whether it actually happened in the game, then yes, it did, because there was nothing pointing to the contrary.
