I'm more like an amateur photographer. I don't understand anything about photographs, I just want to use it to take familiar photos, but I want them to look good, sharp and the colors to be accentuated. I was thinking in the Canon Sx40 and Nikon P510 but maybe they're too much for me (and a little expensive). Which ones do you think I should buy? Less than 400 bucks, please, I'm from south america

Buy the best you can afford otherwise you will only buy cheap and buy twice.
Canon SX40 would be excellent. You can use it on Auto and learn the more complicated settings at your own pace.
The next step up from this is the 1100 D DSLR but you will not be able to afford the good lenses yet.
Remember in the menu settings of most modern enthusiast level cameras you can personalize colour saturation and sharpening level.
Fujifilm do comparable models a lot cheaper. Nobody says you have to use the viewfinder and manual controls, but they can be very useful.
