I wanted to watch a movie for the first time since getting a new motherboard and reinstalling windows on this oc, but they wouldn't play properly in media player. so i went back to the site i downloaded the video and subtitle files from and it suggested i download a certain codec... but that didn't help, so i think i tried downloading another one... but can't really remember. it still didn't work so i downloaded divx player and the divx codecs, but divx player freezes every time i open it up. google told me that i might have conflicting codecs, and i should delete the ones i don't want.
in device manager there are 13 items listen under video codecs... divx 6.9.2, xvid mpeg 4, indeo video 5.10, and several others with more random names. when i go to remove one it warns me that i could be about to **** up my system...
which ones do you think i need to delete (and are safe to delete) to get movies working?

Uninstall any codecs or codec packs that you installed and start over, don't uninstall or delete any codecs that are part of Windows.
Only install one codec pack at a time, uninstall it before installing a different pack to avoid problems.
You should be able to play almost anything by installing ffdshow tryouts,
http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/
or you could go with one of the k-lite codec packs (they all use ffdshow)
To know what codecs you specifically need to play a certain video use Media Info lite
http://download.cnet.com/MediaInfo-Lite/3000-2248_...
it will tell you everything you need to know about a specific media file.
