The doctor just told me that i was severly anemic and my iron level was at 5. I'm now on iron tablets and feeling a lot better. But why would it be so low? I have normal periods, and I eat red meat and spinich etc pretty regularly. Are there any other things that cause such low iron? And what should my iron be at if i'm a 17 year old girl?

when you eat spinach, you must eat it with fat or else it won't be absorbed as much.
There are several fat soluble vitamins and if you don't eat fat with the food rich in vitamin, you can have absorbing problems. that is why the trend of eating low fat food is really dangerous, your brain needs fat, as it helps coat the myeline sheath, in other words for those who go on a fat free diet, i betcha they have memory problems. Coconut oil is a very good one to use instead of processed vegetable oil. Not all fats are bad, but you must combine your vegetables with fat.
I'm not talking about eating a bucket of lard, but maybe bacon with spinach is quite good.
